Natural herbs for the treatment of hypertension


Naturally occurring medicinal plants, herbs having hypotensive/antihypertensive potential




Around the world many adults  deal with hypertension, also called high blood pressure. There are ways to treat the condition, including lifestyle changes or medications.
If you think you should try herbs for medical reasons, whether it’s the whole herb or a supplement, consult your doctor first before doing that. Some herbs, especially in large amount if taken, may produce undesirable side effects or interfere with other medications.

1. Basil


Basil is a herb that goes very well in variety of foods. It also might help lower your blood pressure. Extract of basil has been shown to lower blood pressure, although only briefly. If you add fresh basil to your diet it certainly can’t hurt. Keep a small pot of the herb in your kitchen garden and add the fresh leaves to pastas, soups, salads, and casseroles.

2. Cinnamon


Cinnamon is seasoning that needs to be added to your routine diet, and it may bring your blood pressure numbers down. Consuming cinnamon every day may lower blood pressure in people with diabetes, according to a paper in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition. You should Include more cinnamon in your diet by simply sprinkling its crushed form on your breakfast cereal, oatmeal, and even in your coffee or tea. At dinner, cinnamon enhances the flavor of stir-fries and curries.

3. Cardamom


Cardamom is also a seasoning that comes from India and is often used in South Asian cuisine and recipes. A study investigating the health effects of cardamom found that participants saw significant reductions in their blood pressure readings after taking daily cardamom for several months. You can include cardamom seeds or powder in spice rubs, soups and stews, and even baked goods for a special flavor and a positive health benefit.

4. Flaxseed


Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been found to lower blood pressure significantly. Flaxseed protects against atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease by lowering serum cholesterol, improving the tolerance to take glucose, and also acts as an amazing antioxidant. You can buy many products that contain flaxseed, but a better bet is to buy ground flaxseed or grind it yourself in a coffee grinder and add it to your home-cooked meals. The best part is that it can be stirred into any dish like soups and smoothies etc. Store flaxseed in your freezer to retain optimum potency.

5. Garlic

This pungent seasoning not only just flavors your food but disturb your breath. Garlic can lower your blood pressure by causing your blood vessels to relax and dilate correctly. This reduces blood pressure.
You can add fresh garlic to your recipes. And if you simply can’t eat it, you can get garlic in supplement form as well.

6. Ginger

Ginger can also help in controling blood pressure, as it has been shown to improve blood circulation and also helps to relax the muscles surrounding blood vessels. Ginger is a versatile ingredient which is commonly used in asian foods and can also be added to sweets or beverages. Ginger is good for throat infection too if you use it in your green tea.

7. Hawthorn

Hawthorn is herb used for high blood pressure that has been used in traditional Chinese medicines for thousands of years. Hawthorn extracts seem to be beneficial on cardiovascular health. This includes helping reduce blood pressure, the prevent clot formation, and increase blood circulation. You can take hawthorn as a pill, liquid extract, or in the tea.

8. Celery seed

Celery is used to flavor soups and other savory dishes. Celery has been used to treat hypertension in China and it has been found very effective. It helps to lower blood pressure, but you can also juice the whole plant. Celery is a diuretic and has its effect on blood pressure.

9. French lavender

The beautiful, perfume-like scent of lavender is one of the amazing characteristics of this plant. Lavender's oil can induce relaxation and may lower your blood pressure. The leaves can be used in the same way you would use rosemary on many of the recipes you know.

10. Cat’s claw

Cat’s claw is a natural herb medicine used in traditional Chinese practice to treat hypertension as well as neurological health problems.
